Colleges & Universities in Maryland
Public Universities, Community Colleges & Private Institutions
Maryland has one of the most diverse higher-education systems in the United States, with public research universities, four-year public institutions, community colleges, private colleges and universities, specialized institutions, and federal academies.
This directory brings together Maryland's major four-year public institutions, public community colleges, private and independent colleges and universities, and selected federal degree-granting institutions in one convenient reference.
The goal is to help high-school students, parents, transfer students, adult learners, and anyone researching higher education compare institutions, locations, and official websites in one place.

1. Public Four-Year Institutions — 13
Maryland's public four-year higher-education system includes 11 degree-granting institutions within the University System of Maryland, plus Morgan State University and St. Mary's College of Maryland.
The University System of Maryland has 12 institutions/components, including a research component; therefore, the research component is shown separately below rather than being counted as a university.
2. Public Research Institutions — 2
Maryland also has public research institutions that are important parts of the state's higher-education and scientific research infrastructure. They are not counted as additional four-year universities in the 13-institution public-university total above.
3. Maryland Community Colleges — 16
Maryland has 16 public community colleges. These institutions provide associate degrees, transfer programs, workforce training, certificates, continuing education, and other affordable postsecondary opportunities.
4. Private & Independent Institutions
Maryland has a broad private and independent higher-education sector. The institutions below include traditional four-year colleges and universities as well as specialized and religious degree-granting institutions recognized or regulated by Maryland.
Maryland's private higher-education sector contains institutions with very different missions. Some are traditional liberal-arts colleges or universities, while others specialize in technology, art, health, theology, Jewish studies, cybersecurity, maritime education, or other professional fields.
The Maryland Higher Education Commission regulates collegiate institutions operating in Maryland and distinguishes public, independent, and other private institutions. Because the state directory contains specialized institutions as well as traditional colleges, this table is broader than a simple list of traditional four-year universities.
5. Federal Degree-Granting Institutions in Maryland — 2
Two major federal institutions located in Maryland are included here for completeness. They are not part of Maryland's state public higher-education system.
Maryland's official higher-education classification can produce different totals depending on what is being counted.
