Colleges & Universities in Idaho
Public Universities, Community & Technical Colleges & Private Institutions
Idaho, known as the Gem State, offers a diverse higher-education system that includes public universities, community colleges, technical education, private colleges, specialized institutions, and career-focused programs.
Idaho's public higher-education system includes four four-year colleges and universities and four two-year community or technical colleges. Together, these eight public institutions provide bachelor's, master's, doctoral, associate-degree, certificate, and career-technical programs.
Idaho also has a number of private colleges and universities, including traditional nonprofit colleges, religious institutions, specialized professional schools, and career-focused institutions.
This directory brings together Idaho's major public and private degree-granting higher-education institutions in one convenient list. It is designed for high-school students, college applicants, parents, transfer students, adult learners, career changers, and anyone researching higher education opportunities in Idaho.
The main directory below contains 17 Idaho-based degree-granting institutions: 8 public institutions and 9 private institutions.
Idaho Higher-Education at a Glance
- 4 public four-year universities and colleges.
- 4 public two-year community or technical colleges.
- 9 private Idaho-based degree-granting institutions.
- Total: 17 degree-granting institutions.
1. Public 4-Year Universities & Colleges — 4
Idaho has four public four-year institutions: Boise State University, Idaho State University, Lewis-Clark State College, and the University of Idaho. These institutions offer bachelor's degrees as well as graduate and professional programs.
2. Public 2-Year Community & Technical Colleges — 4
Idaho has four primary public two-year institutions: College of Eastern Idaho, College of Southern Idaho, College of Western Idaho, and North Idaho College. These institutions offer associate degrees, certificates, workforce training, and technical education programs.
3. Private Degree-Granting Institutions — 9
Idaho's private higher-education sector includes nonprofit universities and colleges, religious institutions, and specialized professional institutions. The list below focuses on Idaho-based private institutions that grant college-level degrees.
Idaho's State Board of Education maintains a registration system for private postsecondary educational institutions. Some long-established private nonprofit institutions are exempt from registration under Idaho administrative rules, while other private institutions must register with the State Board.
The five long-established nonprofit institutions specifically identified by the State Board as exempt from registration are Brigham Young University–Idaho, The College of Idaho, Northwest Nazarene University, New Saint Andrews College, and Boise Bible College.
Additional Postsecondary & Career-Technical Providers
Idaho also has proprietary schools, career-training providers, and out-of-state institutions that operate authorized programs or locations in the state. These are not included in the 17-institution main directory unless they are Idaho-based degree-granting institutions.
For example, the Idaho State Board of Education's registered postsecondary-school information has included institutions such as Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Grand Canyon University, Park University, and Treasure Valley Community College as authorized institutions operating in Idaho. Because these institutions are headquartered outside Idaho, they are not counted as Idaho-based institutions in the main total above.
McCall College is a private, nonprofit, community-based institution registered with the Idaho State Board of Education as a proprietary school. Its current programs are certificate/workforce oriented and the institution states that it does not currently have regionally accredited degree programs.
Therefore, it is useful to mention separately when discussing Idaho's broader postsecondary education and workforce-training landscape, but it is not counted in the main degree-granting college and university total.
- Public 4-Year Universities & Colleges: 4
- Public 2-Year Community & Technical Colleges: 4
- Private Degree-Granting Institutions: 9
