6. Tribal / Native American Higher Education

Haskell Indian Nations University is a federally operated university located in Lawrence, Kansas. It is an important part of Kansas's higher-education landscape, particularly for Native American students.

Because Haskell is a federal institution rather than a Kansas state public university, it is not included in the seven Kansas public universities above.

Address: 155 Indian Avenue, Lawrence, KS 66046

Institutions No Longer Operating

The Kansas Board of Regents' historical independent-institution list also contains institutions that are marked as closed. They are not counted in the active totals above.
  • Marymount College — Salina — Closed
  • St. John's College — Winfield — Closed
  • St. Mary of the Plains College — Dodge City — Closed
Important Note About the Counts

The categories on this page are based on different state and institutional classifications. Therefore, the numbers should not simply be added together to create one universal "total number of colleges" for Kansas.

For example, WSU Tech is part of Wichita State University, and Washburn Institute of Technology is part of Washburn University. They are presented separately because of their technical education role.

Likewise, Haskell Indian Nations University is federally operated and is therefore separate from Kansas's state public university system.
