Colleges & Universities in Louisiana
Public Universities, Community & Technical Colleges & Private Institutions
Louisiana offers a diverse higher-education system that includes public universities, community and technical colleges, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), independent nonprofit universities, seminaries, and specialized institutions.
This directory brings together Louisiana's major four-year public universities, public community and technical colleges, and independent/private institutions in one convenient reference table.
The goal is to help high-school students, parents, transfer students, adult learners, and anyone researching higher education compare institutions, locations, and official websites in one place.
Louisiana Higher-Education at a Glance

- 12 Louisiana Community & Technical College System (LCTCS) Colleges
- 11 Independent / Private Institutions included in this directory
- Specialized graduate, medical, law, veterinary, and research institutions are discussed separately in the note below.
1. Public Universities — 14
Louisiana's public four-year institutions are operated through the Louisiana State University System, University of Louisiana System, and Southern University System.
Additional Public University Campuses
Louisiana also has Southern University at New Orleans and Southern University at Shreveport. These institutions are public four-year/associate-degree institutions within the Southern University System and are included below because they are important public higher-education options.
2. Louisiana Community & Technical Colleges — 12
The Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) currently consists of 12 community and technical colleges serving students across the state. The system reports 65 campuses serving every parish.
3. Private & Independent Institutions — 11
Louisiana's independent higher-education sector includes nonprofit private universities, colleges, and theological institutions. The Louisiana Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (LAICU) represents the independent nonprofit sector. Current LAICU information indicates 11 institutions, while state sources also identify Notre Dame Seminary as an independent private institution.
Louisiana has several historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Among the institutions in this directory are Grambling State University, Southern University and A&M College, Southern University at New Orleans, Southern University at Shreveport, Dillard University, and Xavier University of Louisiana.
Students interested in HBCUs should visit each institution's official website for current admission requirements, programs, scholarships, and campus information.
4. Specialized Public Higher-Education Institutions
Louisiana also operates specialized public institutions that are important to the state's higher-education system but are not traditional undergraduate four-year universities. These include medical, health sciences, law, veterinary, agricultural, and research institutions.
Louisiana's higher-education system contains more institutions than the 37 primary institutions presented in the main directory. The Louisiana Board of Regents also recognizes specialized institutions such as LSU Health Sciences Center campuses, LSU Law, LSU Veterinary Medicine, Southern University Law Center, and other research or professional entities.
These specialized institutions are shown separately because they generally serve graduate, professional, medical, law, veterinary, or research students rather than functioning as conventional two-year or four-year undergraduate colleges.
The classification is therefore designed for a student-friendly directory rather than simply counting every administrative or specialized unit as a separate undergraduate college.
- Public Four-Year Universities: 14
- Additional Southern University Public Campuses: 2
- LCTCS Community & Technical Colleges: 12
- Independent / Private Institutions: 11
- Specialized Public Institutions: 5 shown separately
