Colleges & Universities in Maine
Public Universities, Community Colleges & Private Institutions
Maine offers a diverse higher-education system that includes public universities, community colleges, a public maritime academy, private liberal arts colleges, universities, health-profession schools, art institutions, theological schools, and specialized institutions.
This directory brings together Maine's major four-year public institutions, public community colleges, and private degree-granting institutions in one convenient reference table.
The goal is to help high-school students, parents, transfer students, adult learners, and anyone researching higher education compare institutions, locations, and official websites in one place.
Maine Higher-Education at a Glance
- 8 Public Four-Year Institutions
- 7 Public Community Colleges
- 17 Private Degree-Granting Institutions
- 32 Main Degree-Granting Institutions included in this directory
1. Public Universities & Academy — 8
Maine's public four-year higher-education sector consists of the seven universities of the University of Maine System plus Maine Maritime Academy.
The University of Maine System officially identifies seven public universities: the University of Maine, University of Maine at Augusta, University of Maine at Farmington, University of Maine at Fort Kent, University of Maine at Machias, University of Maine at Presque Isle, and University of Southern Maine.
The University of Maine System officially consists of seven public universities. The University of Maine at Machias is listed by the System as one of the seven named universities, but it is now a regional campus of the University of Maine for accreditation purposes.
For this student-friendly directory, Machias is still displayed as a separate campus because it remains an important Maine higher-education location and retains its name and location under Maine law.
2. Maine Community Colleges — 7
The Maine Community College System (MCCS) has seven public community colleges. The system provides two-year associate degrees, certificates, workforce training, early-college programs, and other educational opportunities.
3. Private Institutions — 17
The Maine Department of Education's current degree-granting institutions list identifies 17 private institutions with a physical presence in Maine. These include liberal arts colleges, universities, art schools, health-profession institutions, theological schools, and specialized colleges.
The private-institution count follows the current Maine Department of Education degree-granting institutions list. The state list includes institutions with different missions and degree structures, so not every school in this section is a traditional residential four-year university.
For example, some institutions specialize in art, health professions, theology, visual arts, documentary media, or maritime-related education. Students should review the individual institution's current programs and admission requirements before applying.
4. Specialized & Professional Education
Maine's higher-education landscape also includes professional and specialized programs that may not fit neatly into the traditional four-year university or community-college categories.
Examples include law, health professions, visual arts, theological education, maritime education, documentary media, environmental studies, and workforce-oriented programs.
Maine also licenses proprietary postsecondary schools separately. Those career and technical schools are not included in the 17 private degree-granting institutions above, because they represent a different category of postsecondary education.
5. Other State Training Opportunities
Maine also operates state training and workforce-development programs that are not counted as colleges or universities in the main directory. For example, the state identifies the Maine Criminal Justice Academy as a state training academy.
These organizations are intentionally excluded from the college count because they are not conventional degree-granting colleges or universities.
- Public Four-Year Institutions: 8
- Maine Community College System: 7
- Private Degree-Granting Institutions: 17
- Main Institutions in This Directory: 32
