According to the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE), Kentucky has 8 public universities and the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) with 16 community and technical colleges. Kentucky's independent nonprofit sector also includes 18 AIKCU institutions.

The Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) consists of 16 colleges with more than 70 campuses throughout the Commonwealth. KCTCS provides associate degrees, diplomas, certificates, workforce training, and transfer opportunities.
